D.C. Talk-Jesus Freak~
Hi, I’m Jason Miller a producer for Shout7 Productions.
There was a mushrooming effect on the Christian music world from the Jesus Freak album by D.C. Talk.
D.C. Talk is Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max
Smith. D.C. Talk is short for decent Christian talk. They began a hip-hop group
sounding much like Will Smith did in his early years. They rapped with synthy
rifs, and dropped bass to appeal to owners of subwoofers.
Michael and Kevin wanted to take the band in a direction that
they knew they were capable of. They saw the opportunity to impact the world
with their message of faith, hope, and love in a way that would be appealing. Alternative-Grunge
with touches of hip-hop would carry this album to a double platinum status. It
would be something that millions would be able to relate to.
The opening track begins with what sounds like the end of a
promise. It’s called So Help Me God. The 2nd track supports the group’s call
for diversity among races. Track 3 is the famous Jesus Freak track. “It is
believed to be the first link between grunge and rapcore.”* Cover songs on the
album include “Day By Day” from the movie Godspell and “In The Light” by
Charlie Peacock. Michael Tait would even parody the title song Jesus Freak on
track 9. Toby and Kevin had to leave the studio when he was recording it
because they were laughing so hard. Spoken samples of Billy Graham echo on track
12, “Mind’s Eye.”
The members of D.C. Talk have gone with their separate ways,
each with his own solo album and then some. They each have very different
genres that their works reside in as well. Toby is Hip-Hop based, Michael is
Rock based, and Kevin is Euro-Pop fused with avant-Garde. Revisit this classic
that changed the world, whether you knew it or not.
